    U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak joined Mark & Walt in the Morning today to discuss the hot-button issue of his stance on abortion funding language in the health care reform package under discussion in Washington, D.C.. The Menominee Democrat explained his reasons for why he is holding to his convictions on the issue as well as his outlook on reaching a reasonable compromise to secure his vote for health care reform.     Here are some excerpts from a conversation with United States Senator Carl Levin concerning HIRE legislation currently making it’s way through Congress. The legislation is in at least two parts with one section moving through the U.S. Senate and the other being considered in the House of Representatives. The legislation is a combination of incentives and funding programs to get unemployed workers back on the job.

    April Lindala, Director of the Center For Native American Studies at Northern Michigan University joined us to give us an update on events and activities going on this weekend at NMU being put on by the Native American Student Association. Comedian Don Burnstick, a Canadian First Nations comic is performing at NMU on Friday evening and the 18th Annual ‘Learning to Walk Together’ Traditional Pow Wow is being held on Saturday. Both events are being held at the Vandament Arena on Campus.

    Marie Peasley from Bell Hospital joined us today to let us know about the Bell Hospital Women’s Health Expo that is going on this Saturday at Bell Hospital in Ishpeming. She gave us a run-down of scheduled physician lectures and activities planned for the day for interested folks to take part in. While the event is focused on women’s health, it is open to both men and women.     Sam Crowley, kayak instructor for the YMCA of Marquette County joined us for “Y” Wednesday to tell us about a special opportunity for the public to help out the YMCA win a competitive grant from Pepsi to assist them with funding with the kayak program at the Y. The program is set to award money to the programs in the competition that gather the most votes through online voting. Karen Kasperzak, Youth Center Supervisor from the Lake Superior Village in Marquette, joined us as well to tell us about how the kayaking education program has been a big hit with the kids at the village and why it’s important for the community to step up and vote for the program at the YMCA.     The Marquette General Hospital Women’s and Children’s Center is offering a series of classes, activities and workshops for parents as well as grandparents, teachers and other guardians and caregivers. The director of the center, Cindy Ampe, joined us today to give us an overview of the program and it’s activities during this Parenting Awareness Month. The events planned for the month are being held in several areas around Marquette County and are free and open to the public.

  • MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP MURDER UPDATE
    State Police at the Negaunee Post have released an update of their investigation into a recent murder in Marquette Township, and Federal authorities have increased the reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect or suspects in the case. The investigation is continuing into the shooting death of Robert Dusseau at the ‘Quick Cash & Guns’ store in Marquette Township on Tuesday, February 23-rd. Detectives say the suspect stole an undetermined amount of cash as well as a long gun, a handgun and a digital video recorder and monitor. There is also a new composite sketch and description of the suspect that has been released to the public. The suspect, who was seen in the store around 5-pm on the 23-rd, is described as a white male in his late twenties or early thirties in a tan hooded sweatshirt with a zippered front. The suspect was also seen on a surveillance video walking away from the victim’s vehicle after it was parked in a lot near the Birchwood Apartments on Werner Street in Marquette Township around 7:30-pm on the 23-rd.   • MARQUETTE AREA SCHOOLS TO RELOCATE 5-TH GRADE CLASSES

    The Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education has voted to relocate 5-th graders in the district to a new location. Following a 4-hour meeting and workshop last night, the board decided on a 5-to-2 vote to move 5th graders from the Graveraet school to the Bothwell school starting next year. The Bothwell school will now house 5th through 8th graders. Superintendent Jon Hartwig, during an exclusive interview with Great Lakes Radio News, said educational uses will be developed for Graveraet including the possibility of used it as an expanded alternative high school. Hartwig added that over time, the Board of Education will look at other possible grade alignment options.

    YMCA of Marquette County Executive Director Lisa Coombs-Gerou and Marquette County Health Department Director George Sedlacheck came in to discuss a new survey and grant that had details about the the healthiness of Marquette County. The “ACHEIVE” Grant, awarded to the YMCA of Marquette County and the Marquette County Health Department is set up to increase the availability of healthy activities and the education of healthy activities to residents of Marquette County.

  • NEGAUNEE SCHOOLS CHANGE THEIR SCHOOL DAY
    Negaunee Public Schools Superintendent James DeRocher joined us to discuss a plan developed in response to a projected deficit of $265,791 for 2009-10 school year and a projected deficit of up to $1.2 Million for the 2010-11school year. The Board of Education and the Negaunee Education Association have signed a Letter of Agreement, which reduces the number of instructional days for 2009-10 school year from 180 days to 175 days. This change in the number of instructional days also means that the school day will be 30 minutes longer for students, beginning on Monday, February 22, 2010. At the Negaunee High and Middle Schools, classes will begin 10 minutes earlier, 7:30 a.m. and 7:45 p.m. respectively, while at Lakeview Elementary School classes will begin at 8:40 a.m. The present bus pick-up schedule for the morning will be 10 minutes earlier, beginning on Monday. Afternoon dismissal times will be as follows: Middle School: 2:50 p.m., High School: 3 p.m. and Lakeview: 3:50 p.m. Afternoon bus drop off times will be 20 minutes later for the High School and Middle School students and 10- minutes later for Lakeview students.     Stan Hubert, owner and operator of the Dry Dock Tavern in Harvey stopped in this morning to give us an update on a special snowmobile run coming up tomorrow to benefit the Marquette-Alger Regional Service Agency and their programs for special needs children. He talked about what’s going on tomorrow and the events, activities related to the event. It’s a great opportunity to hit the trails for a good cause and help out area kids with special needs.

  • HELPING OUR PETS IN TIMES OF NEED

    Christy Beck, the Community Service Co-ordinator for the Red Cross of Marquette County joined us this morning to fill us in on a program that has been developed to train people to provide first aid to their pets. This program has been offered by the Red Cross to the people in member agencies, but has never been offered to the public here in Marquette County. The training session is an experimental one, meaning that if enough people show up and have an interest in continuing training, the Marquette county red Cross will continue to provide it.
