LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder  announced the appointment of Joyce Hayes Giles, of Detroit, as chair of both the Education Achievement Authority board of directors and Executive Committee.

The board oversees the Education Achievement Authority, which was created by inter-local agreement in 2011 to operate 15 of the state’s most-struggling schools. The 11-member board of directors includes appointees of the governor, Detroit Public Schools and Eastern Michigan University. Five members of the board make up the Executive Committee.

“Joyce has enjoyed a distinguished career and I am pleased to have her professional background and skills on the board,” Snyder said.

Before retiring, Hayes Giles was assistant to the chairman and senior vice president of public affairs of DTE Energy, a position she held since 2012. She spent more than 35 years with DTE serving as vice president of corporate resources and senior vice president of customer service. She received numerous awards throughout her career including Humanitarian of the Year from the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity in 2012, one of Detroit’s Most Influential Women in 2008 by Crain’s Detroit Business, and in 2005 she was awarded the Booker T. Washington Two Way Street Award. She is a member of the Health Alliance Plan of Michigan board of directors, the Habitat for Humanity of Detroit board of directors, and the Detroit Music Hall Board of Directors. Hayes Giles holds a bachelor’s degree from Knoxville College, an MBA from the University of Detroit and a law degree from Wayne State University.

Hayes Giles will serve as chair of the EAA board for a term expiring at the pleasure of the governor. She replaces Mark Murray on the executive committee who will still hold a postion on the board of directors. Her executive committee term expires March 13, 2018. This appointment is not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
