Join law enforcement members at nearly 30 community runs between Saturday, September 7 and Saturday, September 14 as they raise money for Special Olympics Michigan athletes during Law Enforcement Torch Run® Central Route week! Community members are invited and encouraged to form teams and take part in this event. A Community Run is an opportunity for law enforcement members and community members to run shoulder to shoulder, raising money and awareness for Special Olympics Michigan athletes. 27 community runs are scheduled for Central Route week with two additional runs taking place at later dates.

Central Route is a 750-mile non-stop relay run from Copper Harbor in the tip of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to Sterling Heights in metro-Detroit. It starts early on Monday, September 9 and ends on Friday, September 13. The relay run consists of three teams: Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC), and Michigan State Police (MSP). Each team provides six runners who each run five miles at a time averaging eight minute miles. These dedicated runners have been raising money throughout the year to participate in this prestigious event.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run® Travel Team returns this year. The Travel Team will kick off their run at the Benton Harbor Community Run and will travel to more than two dozen other Community Runs around the state. The Travel Team will spend one week moving around Michigan to support Community Runs and their fundraising efforts. All of this will coincide with the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run® Central Route.

To participate in the Community Run it is $25 per person. The registration includes a Dri-FIT T-shirt. Community Runs are scheduled for Alma, Allegan, Alpena, Battle Creek, Baraga, Bay City, Benton Harbor, Big Rapids, East Grand Rapids, East Tawas, Gladwin, Greenville, Hillsdale County, Jackson, Lansing, Mt. Pleasant, Midland, Munising, Newberry, Oakland County, Petoskey, Port Huron, Roscommon, Rudyard, Shiawassee County, Sterling Heights, Sylvan Lake, Traverse City, and West Branch.

Athlete Molly Hincka from Area 27 (Livingston County), has been chosen to run the prestigious 5-mile Mackinac Bridge leg during the 2013 Law Enforcement Torch Run® Central Route. “It’s very cool because I never ran across the Mackinac Bridge. And I’m very excited to see all the people jog across the bridge and I’m just very excited to do it!” said Molly Hincka Molly who will run alongside one officer from each of the three Central Route teams; Michigan State Police, Department of Corrections, and the Fraternal Order of Police. One runner from each team will be chosen in September for the Mackinac Bridge leg.

LETR has more than 85,000 law enforcement officers involved worldwide and has raised more than $300 million dollars in the 30 years that it has supported Special Olympics.

Traverse City

Run Details: Starts in parking lot of US 31, and Cass Ave. The run will then proceed South up Cass St. to Front St. We will go rt. on Front St. to Division St. Once at Division St. again we will make a rt. and proceed to US 31. We will finish by turning rt. on US 31 and end up in the parking lot where we staged. Approx. distance is 2.8 miles.

Iron Mountain
