Negaunee, Mich.– 04/11/2018– City Manager Nate Heffron has issued a City Manager Directive 2-2018. This directive establishes the creation of a special committee that will research and present advice on issues concerning the preservation of Negaunee’s culture and history.
The committee will be known as the Special Committee on Cultural and Historic Preservation. This committee will consist of six members, of such will consist of the City Manager, DPW Director, and four members-at-large appointed by the City Manager. The committee will perform several functions as follows:
- Assist in determining the boundaries of the historic district;
- Hold public meetings to gain insight from the community and stakeholders;
- Hold meetings with downtown business and property owners;
- Assist in preparing a strategic plan for the historic district.
Jessica Flores of Preservation Forward, a historic preservation professional who specializes in the rehabilitation of the historic built environment, will facilitate this initiative on behalf of the City of Negaunee in order to achieve the City’s goal to have the downtown listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The City Manager is seeking qualified individuals who may wish to serve on this committee; qualified individuals must live within the corporate limits of the City of Negaunee and be at least eighteen (18) years of age, and have an interest in and/or knowledge of historic architecture, history, historic preservation, or archaeology.
