MEA Launches New Web Video Highlighting Republican School Cuts
EAST LANSING, Oct. 9, 2012 —The Michigan Education Association today launched a new Web video holding Republican legislators accountable for cutting schools to pay for a $1.8 billion tax break to corporate special interests.
The new video features a football team comprised of CEOs dressed in business suits and gold helmets, squaring off in a lopsided game against a team of middle-school football players. It serves as a sequel to an MEA ad from last year that featured the same CEOs ransacking a school.
“Lansing politicians continue to put CEOs and corporate special interests ahead of our children, and they need a little reminder lesson on priorities that can help rebuild Michigan,” MEA President Steve Cook said. “As football season kicks into high gear across Michigan, we want citizens to remember the ‘game’ Republican legislators played last year: cut $1 billion from schools to pay for a $1.8 billion tax cut for corporate special interests. Republicans in Lansing must be held accountable for cutting our schools and putting our children’s future at risk.”

SCRIPT: “This November, voters in Michigan have never faced a clearer choice: Stand up for kids…or CEOs. It’s a fact: Republicans in Lansing voted to give rich CEOs and corporate special interests a $1.8 billion tax break, paid for by cuts to local schools. Let’s see that play again. Republicans in Lansing voted to give a $1.8 billion tax break to oil companies, big banks, insurance and drug companies — rewarding rich CEOs with even bigger bonuses while making it harder for our kids to get the skills they need to compete for jobs. The Republican tax break for CEOs has forced cuts to math and science programs, cuts to sports, cuts to music education – making teachers and parents pay hundreds of dollars out of pocket for basic school supplies like books and pencils. It’s time to settle the score and stand up for kids, not CEOS.”
