LANSING, Mich., May 8, 2014 – Michigan Republican Party Chairman Bobby Schostak issued the following statement regarding the announcement of the Michigan Legislature’s plan to settle Detroit’s financial restructuring:
“The bold plan put forward today by Republican leaders in Lansing is another critical step forward in Detroit’s revival. There is still work to be done in the city, but this is the kind of leadership Michigan families expect, and deserve, from our elected officials. The oversight commission created in this plan will protect the city’s future, ensure the dollars invested today continue fostering the city’s recovery, and guarantee the will of Detroit’s citizens is faithfully represented.
“Protecting pensions for first responders while developing a long term, financially sound retirement plan for the city’s future stewards was the right thing to do.
“This plan is positive news for all Michigan families regardless of which community is called home. As Detroit reclaims its prominence, Michigan’s economic and cultural heartbeat will grow stronger in every corner of the state.”
