Washington DC – No thanks to Representatives Tim Walberg (MI-07), Dan Benishek (MI-01) and Kerry Bentivolio (MI-11), Americans who are sick and tired of Washington gridlock are in for yet another Republican-forced Congressional showdown that threatens to shut down the government and grind economic growth to a halt. On Friday, September 20 at 2:30 PM, U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), ranking member of the House Budget Committee, U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews (D-NJ), and health reform advocates will hold an emergency press call calling to the carpet Representatives Walberg, Benishek, Bentivolio, Speaker Boehner and the Tea Party economic saboteurs in Congress for their plans to hold government services and the full faith and credit of the United States hostage until their fantasy of defunding Obamacare and leaving all Americans susceptible again to the worst insurance industry practices becomes reality.

At Issue: Congress must soon pass a continuing resolution approving the federal resources needed to keep the U.S. government open past September 30. Failure to do so would mean a government shutdown that would disrupt critical services for millions of people. Unfortunately, House Republicans see this deadline as an opportunity to play partisan games with people’s lives.

House GOP’s Plan A: Despite poll after poll after poll showing that the American people reject Republican efforts to defund Obamacare and instead want Congress to do everything they can to make the law work, House Republicans announced plans to vote for a continuing resolution that requires Obamacare be defunded, risking a government shutdown as the Senate and the President will never support such a radical proposal.

Plan B: When the defund bill goes no where in the Senate, House Republicans’ “back-up” plan is to tie another vital vote – raising the debt limit to pay the nation’s bills already approved by Congress – to derailing Obamacare. When House Republicans held the debt ceiling hostage in 2011, it led to a downgrade of U.S. credit and “major disruption in global markets”. If they go through with it again, it will not only put at risk the full faith and credit of the United States government, but threaten to raise interest rates “through the roof” and hurt businesses and families, and according to leading economists, “could tip the economy back into recession.” But if Republicans won’t listen to economists, facts and historical precedent, will they listen to Ronald Reagan (Preview) who warned about the severe economic consequences of defaulting on the nation’s debt obligations when he was President?

Representatives Walberg, Benishek, Bentivolio will be urged to go straight to Plan C: listen to the majority of Americans and not the Tea Party extremists, pass a clean continuing resolution to keep the government open, pass a clean bill to raise the debt limit, give up the ridiculous obsession with leaving millions uninsured and leaving millions more at the mercy of the insurance industry, and move on to the people’s business that’s been neglected, including addressing immigration reform, climate change, jobs, and gun violence.

WHO: U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD)

Brad Woodhouse, President, Americans United for Change

WHAT: Press call to call out Representatives Walberg, Benishek, Bentivolio and fellow Tea Party Republicans for Threats to Shut Down the Government and Derail Economic Recovery Over Their Obsession with Defunding Obamacare
