National Center for Public Policy Research Press Release: Smokeless Tobacco Products Reduce Death and Disease, But Anti-Smoking Activists Still Prefer a “Quit or Die” Approach

A study from Israel undermines the case made by activists who oppose tobacco harm reduction strategies. As National Center Risk Analysis Division head Jeff Stier writes in the Jerusalem Post, “many anti-tobacco activists believe in a ‘quit or die’ approach – quit using all tobacco forms completely or we can’t help you.” This view, he says, lacks compassion, is ineffective and is not based on sound science. Instead, says Jeff, one innovative approach to helping people either reduce the amount they smoke or quit smoking altogether is to encourage them to switch from cigarettes, the most harmful form of tobacco and nicotine use, to less harmful forms, such as smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes.  Full story here.
