Because of the difficult economic challenges facing the Upper Peninsula and Michigan today that need immediate, undivided attention and endless effort by leadership to address, I have decided to run for the 109th District House of Representatives seat.
We cannot wait to find better solutions for the 400 mining jobs our region is set to lose, continue to restructure our public education system without input from those that are doing the job or pass bills to fix our roads and transportation system with money that isn’t there. Nor can we wait for Lower Michigan to solve our energy issues or continue to control the urgency of the Dark Store issue.
Now more than ever, elected officials need to represent the voice of the people in how we solve these complex issues at hand. Voting with common sense and respect for how we spend taxpayer money is critical.
I have always voted with fairness, transparency and consistency as an elected official and I believe I have the moral compass, work ethic and integrity that is needed to represent our district at this time. I look forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Fellow Commissioners-For informational purposes only, I would like to inform you of my decision to run for the 109th District House of Representatives seat and forward an email I just sent to John Kivela as a courtesy, letting him know first.Similar to when John Kivela ran for the 109th House of Representative seat while finishing his last term on the city commission, I also plan to honor my current elected position separate from this announcement and my campaign. It was important to me to let you know my intentions before this goes out to the media.I have filed in Lansing and I am on my way home now.Sara

Subject: 109th District House of Representatives SeatJohn-
After filing papers to run for the 109th District seat, I wanted to reach out to you first and let know about my decision before contacting my fellow commissioners or the media.
Please know that my decision to run against you is not personal at all, but rather my convictions to want to stand up and lead the district during this difficult time are extremely strong. I believe I have the morale compass, work ethic and integrity that is needed to represent the 109th now, and for those reasons I have officially filed the paperwork today.
With utmost sincerity and respect-
