Michigan Democratic Party Press Release:
Congressional Staffers, GOP Activists, Candidates and Elected Officials All May Have Participated in Scam
LANSING – The Michigan Democratic Party has obtained copies of Congressman Thad McCotter’s petition signatures that are the focus of an election fraud investigation by the Department of State and Attorney General. In those petitions, the MDP counted 14 petition signature gatherers in including five McCotter Congressional staffers, a candidate for Livonia School Board, the president of the Troy Clawson Republican Forum, Milford Township’s Supervisor, an Oakland County Road Commissioner, and GOP activists.
“Did all 14 of these circulators know about this fraud?” asked MDP Chair Mark Brewer. “Did these 14 people even actually circulate petitions? It’s clear that this election fraud includes a wide range of Republicans throughout Southeast Michigan. How many people knew about this scam and helped to contribute to it? It’s time for answers. These circulators should start talking.”
The Department of State determined that only 244 signatures of the nearly 2,000 turned in by the McCotter campaign were actually valid. Media outlets have also reported that the petitions appeared to be copied from a previous campaign and many of the signatures were duplicated.
“Was this the plan from the outset of the campaign?” asked Brewer. “McCotter claims that his petition gathering started in February. They were only able to get 244 signatures in three months? It’s time for McCotter to start accepting responsibility for this illegal activity. If the fraud is this widespread throughout the Southeastern Michigan GOP, how could McCotter not have known?”
