Former Aramark Supervisor Convicted for Assault for-Hire Plot – Dec. 3

Lansing, Michigan – December 3, 2015 – Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette today announced that former Aramark Supervisor Michael Robert Young, 27, of Kincheloe, was convicted on one felony charge of Solicitation to Commit Assault with Intent to Cause Great Bodily Harm for recruiting an inmate to orchestrate the assault of another inmate. Young was an Aramark employee at Kinross Correctional Facility at the time of the crime.

“No matter the situation, our system of justice demands that individuals not take the law into their own hands, for revenge or any other reason,” said Schuette.

Young was convicted following a two day trial, presided over by the Hon. James P. Lambros in the 91st District Court Sault Ste. Marie. The charge of Solicitation to Commit Assault with Intent to Cause Great Bodily Harm, is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

A sentencing date has not yet been determined.

Background of the Case

Young was employed by Aramark at Kinross Correctional Facility in Chippewa County. In 2014, a Kinross inmate reported to the Michigan Department of Corrections that he was solicited by Young to find an inmate to assault another inmate incarcerated at a different correctional facility. Young allegedly told the inmate that the target inmate was serving a sentence for the murder of one of Young’s relatives and provided the inmate with details including the name, prisoner number, and location of the target inmate. Young offered tobacco products to the inmate in return for recruiting an inmate at the other facility to carry out the proposed assault.  At the joint request of the Chippewa County Prosecutor’s office and MSP, Schuette’s Criminal Division conducted an extensive investigation into the allegations with collaboration from MSP and the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Schuette extended his thanks to his Criminal Division for their work with both the Michigan State Police and the Chippewa County Prosecutor’s office for work on the case.
