seat belt use, impaired driving programs in six Midwest states

LANSING — Pace Marketing & Communications Inc. will work to make Midwest roadways safer through a new communications partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Region 5.

Pace, a Lansing-based advertising, marketing and public relations agency, has approved a new contract to help NHTSA promote its traffic safety programs in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Beginning in December 2013, Pace will develop communications strategies to support NHTSA seat belt and anti-impaired driving campaigns. The agency will also work on other high-priority initiatives, which may include distracted driving, speeding, motorcycle and other traffic safety concerns.

“Pace has a long history of working with governmental agencies and other organizations that serve the public good,” said Deborah Horak, co-owner of Pace with Elissa Crumley. “We are proud to have the opportunity to help literally save lives by partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.”

NHTSA, established by the Highway Safety Act of 1970, is an agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation whose primary mission is to reduce deaths, injuries and economic losses resulting from motor vehicle crashes.

NHTSA Regional Administrator Michael Witter said Pace has an impressive track record of developing campaigns targeted at helping influence behavior change to make our roadways safer.

Pace has worked extensively with the Michigan State Police’s Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) for 10 years on many traffic safety programs and campaigns.

“We look forward to applying the successful tactics and innovative ideas that we have worked on in Michigan to a broader geographic area on behalf of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Region 5,” said Crumley, adding that the NHTSA contract also represents a success in Pace’s strategy to expand beyond its mid-Michigan roots.

“Our goal is to be a premier full-service advertising, marketing and public relations agency in the Midwest,” she said, noting that the agency’s growth will create jobs in Lansing.
