Sponge City Summit Hosted In Detroit Seeks Answers For China

February 22, 2016
Detroit Michigan – A collaboration of Mandarin Environment, the U.S. Department of Commerce, Parjana Distribution, GreeningDetriot.com will be hosting a storm water management summit at Parjana’s main offices in Detroit from 2:30pm – 4:30pm.

The topic will be China’s Sponge City Initiative, with John Robinson and Jiang Shuyang of Mandarin Environment leading the roundtable discussion on the market for green infrastructure. The summit has been created because the Chinese urban planners seem to have underestimated the potential and frequency for larger than normal rain events. The hosts have invited over 100 businesses, municipalities, and urban planners to weigh in their perspectives and create business opportunities.

In April 2015, to more to effectively manage its urban flooding, the Chinese government issued the development of a new and more ecological alternative to the previous urban developments known as “Sponge City”, (or 海绵城市).

The16 model “Sponge Cities” will require infrastructure retrofits of existing cities ranging from Xixian to Chongqing.

The number of Chinese cites affected by floods since 2008 has more than doubled. Extreme weather changes since the late 1990s created chronic water shortages in northern China which led to the construction of an $81 billion canal in order to transfer water from the south to northern areas.

This program will precede the annual and sold out Detroit China Business Association Gala hosted with the DSO at the Max & Marjorie Fisher Music Center the same evening.
