11-24-08: Upcoming NRC Meeting Agenda, BOW Winter Weekend
Posted by james
Natural Resources Commission to Meet Dec. 4 in Lansing
New regulations for taxidermists and animal rehabilitators brought about by the discovery of chronic wasting disease are on the agenda for the Natural Resources Commission meeting Thursday, Dec. 4, in Lansing. The meeting is open to the public.
The meeting begins at 10 a.m. in Room 202 of the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave., when the NRC Policy Committee on Wildlife and Fisheries discusses new bio-security procedures and license fees for taxidermists and new rules for the possession, transportation and rehabilitation of animals by wildlife rehabilitators. The committee also will receive an update on the inland consent decree, review the 2009 Wildlife and Fisheries issues calendar and receive an update on habitat issues.
At 12:30 p.m., the NRC will continue its discussions of expanding opportunities for crossbow hunting in Room 202.
The NRC Policy Committee on Finance and Administration will meet at 1:30 p.m. in Room 202 to review year-end fund balances, reductions in the Snowmobile Registration Fund, various DNR investments with staff from the Michigan Department of Treasury, and receive an update on the department’s audit.
At 3 p.m. the NRC Committee of the Whole will meet in Room 201. The committee will review Department of Natural Resources Director Rebecca Humphries’ action items on the agenda, have a special presentation of this year’s Turkey Cooperator Patch Contest winner, and receive an update from the bear management team.
Public comment begins at 4:30 p.m. Persons wishing to provide public comment on any DNR issue to the NRC should contact Teresa Gloden at 517-373-2352 or glodent@michigan.gov by end of day on Wednesday, Nov. 26 or at the meeting site.
Among the action items for the NRC are wildlife conservation orders related to the possession, transportation and rehabilitation of live wild deer, elk and moose; and changes to taxidermy regulations.
Among the items for Director Humphries’ consideration are an order to restrict snowmobiles to designated trails in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park; changes to statewide trout, salmon, whitefish and
lake herring regulations; a fish disease control order; and authorization for several land transactions.

Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Winter Weekend in UP Feb. 27-March 1
Women seeking to improve their outdoor skills are encouraged to participate in the Department of Natural Resources’ Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program’s Winter Weekend Feb. 27-March 1 in the Upper Peninsula. The annual winter program will be held at the Bay Cliff Health Camp in Big Bay, 30 miles north of Marquette in the Upper Peninsula.
Participants can select instruction from a list of over a dozen outdoor-related activities including cross-country skiing, dog sledding, snowmobiling, winter shelter building, ice fishing, outdoor cooking and reading the winter woods. Some indoor activities also will be offered, such as archery, fly tying and journaling. Professional instructors will offer basic and advanced instruction tailored to the participant’s individual abilities.
The $175 registration fee includes all food and lodging for the weekend, as well as most equipment and supplies. Participants will be housed in comfortable, dorm-style facilities. The fee also includes many extra evening activities including the camp’s group sauna, bonfire/marshmallow roast and other programs.
BOW workshops are for women 18 years of age and older who wish to learn outdoor skills in a relaxed atmosphere. Those interested in participating are urged to register soon as classes fill quickly. Registration materials and course descriptions are available on the DNR Web site.
Any questions can be directed to Sharon Pitz or Penny Bacon at the DNR Marquette Operations Service Center at 906-228-6561, or e-mail, pitzs@michigan.gov or baconp@michigan.gov.

11-18-08: Opening Weekend Pics and Stories
Posted by james
Jeremy Whitmire from Calumet sent us this pic of the buck he got on opening day:
“I am sending a photo of my 9 pt buck shot at 11:05 opening morning. He was chasing a doe along with another smaller buck (4 pt) along the shore of an inland lake in Eagle Harbor Township. My buck came up from behind the four pointer and flipped him into the water with his antlers then I shot the nine point as the doe was leading him back into the woods. About 130 yard neck shot.”

Another report and picture, this one from Darcy Burton:
“OK, so maybe this new combo license isn’t so bad. I’m really glad I didn’t
just buy a single license. I shot this six point in northern Schoolcraft
county Sunday evening, and I’m certainly not ready to be done hunting! I
also saw two smaller bucks before this one showed up. I know the deer
numbers are supposed to be down this year. I’ve not seen quite as many
deer, but more bucks. I’ll take that!
