Iron County Resident Named Hunter Education Instructor of the Year
Iron County resident Dean Dallavalle recently was named the 2008 Hunter
Education Instructor of the Year by the Department of Natural Resources.
Dallavalle, an Iron River resident, was honored by DNR Director Rebecca
Humphries and the Michigan Natural Resources Commission at a recent
meeting in Lansing.
“Dean Dallavalle has been a volunteer hunter education instructor in
Iron County for more than two decades, and has recently mentored his son
Anthony to be a second-generation hunter education instructor,”
Humphries said. “It is people like Mr. Dallavalle who help us pass on
Michigan’s proud hunting heritage to future generations, so that
management and conservation of our state’s natural resources is
ensured for years to come.”
Dallavalle is the lead instructor Western Iron County hunter education
classes held at Iron County Schools and at the Camp Gibbs Recreational
Area. Through donations, he has been able to collect nearly every
possible teaching tool for a successful hunter education class,
Humphries said. Dallavalle and his volunteers provide students with
experience in muzzleloading, rifle, archery, shotgun safety, clay pigeon
shooting, orienteering, hunting ethics, animal identification and
survival classes.
Dallavalle enjoys predator hunting and trapping, as well as fishing. He
is known for bringing in furs for the students to view and touch. He is
planning to assist in teaching the DNR’s new Trapper Education
Program.
The Hunter Education Instructor of the Year Award is an employee- or
volunteer instructor-nominated award presented to the volunteer hunter
education instructor for his or her outstanding volunteer service.
Recipients of the award are recognized for their commitment to continue
the heritage of hunting by developing safe, responsible and
knowledgeable hunters and assisting the DNR in carrying out its mission.
For more information on education opportunities in the outdoors,
including hunter education, visit the DNR’s web site’s Education and Outreach section here.
The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use
and enjoyment of the state’s natural resources for current and future
generations.

Natural Resources Commission to Meet Nov. 6 in Lansing
The Natural Resources Commission will begin holding discussions on
potential expansion of crossbow hunting opportunities at its Nov. 6
meeting in Lansing.
The NRC meeting will be held at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan
Ave., in Lansing. All meetings are open to the public.
The NRC recently revamped its policy on issuing crossbow permits to
hunters with permanent disabilities by streamlining the application
process and making it more inclusive. However, Commissioner John
Madigan, who chairs the NRC Policy Committee on Wildlife and Fisheries,
said he wants to explore other possibilities for crossbow hunting.
Options identified for discussion are allowing the use of crossbows
during any season that allows the use of firearms, establishing a
minimum age for crossbow use without a permit, and possibly establishing
a crossbow deer season. A survey of hunter attitudes about crossbow issues is being conducted on the Department of Natural Resources Web site here.
The crossbow discussion will begin at noon in Room 203 of the Lansing
Center, located at 333 E. Michigan Ave. in Lansing.
The NRC meeting begins at 10:15 a.m. with a meeting of the NRC Policy
Committee on Technology, Information, Marketing and Education that will
focus on hunter recruitment and retention. The NRC Policy Committee on
Wildlife and Fisheries, which will discuss proposed changes to wildlife
rehabilitation and taxidermy rules in response to Chronic Wasting
Disease (CWD), meets at 1:30 p.m. The committee will also hear an update
on CWD activities and discuss proposed fisheries orders.
The Committee of the Whole meets at 3 p.m. to discuss the Director’s
action items and to receive an update on the Island Lake Shooting Range,
inland fisheries grants and an upcoming oil and gas auction.
Public appearances begin at 4:30 p.m. Persons wishing to provide public
comment on any DNR issue to the NRC should contact Teresa Gloden at
517-373-2352 or glodent@michigan.gov either prior to the meeting or at
the meeting site. At 5 p.m., there will be a special presentation of a
DNR Partner in Conservation Award.
Among the action items for the NRC includes consideration of spring
turkey hunting units. DNR Director Rebecca Humphries will consider a
number of fisheries regulation changes, changes to the user charges for
the Ralph A. MacMullan Conference Center and authorization for several
land transactions.
The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, use and enjoyment
of the state’s natural resources for current and future generations.

Statewide Town Hall Meetings on Chronic Wasting Disease Scheduled for October
The Michigan departments of Natural Resources and Agriculture and Michigan State Univeristy Extension (MSUE) will hold a series of town hall meetings across the state priot to the firearm deer hunting season for the public to learn more about Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) and the state’s response plan to manage the disease.
The Marquette meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 23. The meeting will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Citizens Forum Room at Lakeview Arena, located at 401 E. Fair Ave. in Marquette.
Other meetings are scheduled for Kalamazoo (Oct. 22), Frankenmuth (Oct. 27), and Grayling (Oct. 29).
At all meetings, staff from the DNR and MDA will present information on CWD and the state’s emergency response plan for the disease. A question-and-answer session, facilitated by MSUE, will follow the presentations.
On Aug. 25, the DNR and MDA confirmed the state’s first case of CWD in a three-year-old privately-owned white-tailed deer in Kent County. It is still unknown how the animal became infected.
CWD is a fatal neurological disease that affects deer, elk and moose. Infected animals display abnormal behaviors, loss of bodily functions and a progressive weight loss. Current evidence suggests that the disease is transmitted through infectious, self-multiplying proteins (prions). Prions are normal cell proteins whose shape has been transformed, causing CWD. The disease is transmitted by exposure to saliva of infected animals. Susceptible animals can also acquire CWD by eating feces from an infected animal, or soil contaminated by them. Once contaminated, soil is thought to remain a source of infection for many years, making CWD a particularly difficult disease to eradicate.
More information about CWD is available by clicking here

Smallmouth bass fishing is excellent right now. Here’s Adam’s report:

Adam’s recommended grilled duck breast recipe:
Right Click Here to Download the MP3.
Grilled Duck Recipe :
- 4 Duck Breasts (cut into 1/2 – 3/4″ strips)
- Sealed Plastic Bag
- Bottle of Olive Oil
- 3 Tbsp of Soy Sauce
- 3 Tbsp of Worchesteir sauce
- 1 Tbsp of Seasoned Salt
Clean and rinse off duck breasts, place them in a plastic bag, and fill enough olive oil in the bag so it covers the duck breasts. Than add the other sauces and seasonings. Seal up the bag and shake it thoroughly, and refrigerate overnight.
Take duck strips out and cook on the grill, making sure not to overcook the duck. Cook for about 3 – 4 minutes on each side until medium. Great for when you’re hunting on the go. Try wrapping in bacon strips before grilling for a slightly altered taste and slightly juicier result. Be aware that this will alter the taste a bit toward the livery flavor.

DNR Offers Sale of State-Owned Land from land Review Project
State-owned land in 28 counties is being offered for sale as a result of the Department of Natural Resource’s review of state-owned property. Counties with parcels offered for sale by sealed bid auction include Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Luce, and Ontonagon.
The auction is part of the DNR’s Land Consolidation Strategy, an on-going review of all state-owned land that is outside the boundaries of a state park, forest, game area, or recreation area.
Information on the auction, and other land available for purchase, the terms and conditions, and how to submit a bid, are available here.
Parcel information, bid forms, and offer to purchase forms are also available upon request to the Office of Land and Facilities, P.O. Box 30448, Lansing, MI 48909-7948, or by calling 517-373-1240.
Bids on the parcels to be sold by auction must be postmarked by Monday, Dec. 1, 2008. The bid opening will be Wednesday Dec. 10, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. at the DNR offices in Lansing.
Several parcels in Baraga County have frontage on Otter, Sturgeon, and Peshekee rivers, Lake Superior and numerous inland lakes. There are several remote parcels north of Craig Lake State Park. In Houghton County there are forested properties on a variety of inland lakes, including Torch, Rice, and Otter lakes and the Elm River. These parcels are isolated from other state lands and the funds from sale will be used to acquire replacement property.
